Hosts at the table: Whoopi, Joy, Sherri, Elisabeth
Talk show host Laura Ingraham is a guest co-host for today’s show. Laura is a right wing radio talk show host. Laura started off with a dig to Joy, saying this was the first time Joy has spoken to her this morning. She also made the comment that not even Joy is abandoning the Obama’s. Joy’s reply was “Never”. Hasselbeck sarcastically said “That’s disheartening” Pot. Kettle. Bush?
Whoopi then tersely transitioned to the first “hot topic”, discussing the news that Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston have reconciled and are reportedly engaged. Apparently their parents did not know and were breaking the news to them in the magazine. Joy said she thought grizzlies knew where their cubs were all the time. Laura called that an attack on Palin and said the news was lovely. Hasselbeck is concerned, citing the things Levi said in the past and him leaving. Speaking from personal experience, Sherri said it happens after spending Thanksgiving together and putting the baby to sleep and you look at each other. Joy thinks this is all political and suggested they are doing this for Palin’s 2012 presidential run. Laura said it’s best for the child’s parents to be together. Whoopi disagreed, saying there are some parents that are not good to their children.
The next topic of the day was Radar Online releasing even more audio of Mel Gibson’s violent rants towards his ex, Oksana. People are investing possible domestic violence charges and articles are pointing out Mel admitting he is bipolar and manic depressive. Hasselbeck said it points to the question of culpability and what you’re responsible for if you have an illness like that. Sherri asked if it was proven would Mel get a lighter sentence. Laura seemed to blame him having several children and leaving his ex wife on the narcissism of Hollywood. Sherri said it’s the stability of marriage that keeps you grounded. Laura questioned why Oksana would release the tapes [she secretly recorded]. Sherri said she did not release them, her lawyer did. Joy suggested Oksana did not think she’d have help in law enforcement, citing a line in a movie; “He owns the police!” Whoopi took issue with that, definitively saying “Mel doesn’t own the police.” Laura insisted Mel is talented but got sucked into the narcissism of Hollywood and believed his own press.
Whoopi then took the chance to defend herself for defending Mel and his racist rants. She said if bloggers and people who don’t have anything to do had actually watched the show, we would have heard her say she doesn’t condone this. She also said being a black woman, you’d at least give her credit for having some feel whether she was around a racist. Whoopi said that’s fine, but people have called her office and went off on the person answering the phone, chided them for doing what was “supposedly” done by Mel and then told them to kiss her behind. She then said people should not be a coward dog mess and at least she says what she feels on camera. Whoopi continued, saying if she’s in her car and you cut her off, she becomes a racist and anyone who has never done that gets the right to cast the first stone. (I’m picking up my rock now).
After break, Laura began discussing her book. She then started talking negatively about Michelle Obama, prompting Whoopi to ask if Michelle was any different than other First Ladies who have had pet projects. Laura then talked about the strolls in the White House lawns and bought up people’s obsessions with Michelle’s arms and her fitness. Joy shot back, “Someone’s jealous of her arms…”Sherri said we’ve been obsessed with something about every president’s wife and said Michelle has always exercised. Hasselbeck said we should be focusing on what her husband is not doing. Joy mentioned how Laura Bush never blinked or spoke in 8 years and Laura had the nerve to say that was a nasty remark. Sherri called her out for that, to which Ingraham responded it wasn’t and the White House would have to answer whether what is said in the book is true or not. Laura then pulled out a book titled “The Behar Diaries”. She started to read from it but Whoopi cut to commercial. Thank you, Whoopi
The French Parliament voted to ban women from wearing burqas. Supporters of the ban say face coverings are not consistent with the French values of female equality. Ingraham agrees with this ban and would like to see it in the U.S, saying we live in a culture here where it’s important to our way of life to see each others eyes. Joy thinks it’s wrong to do that, saying people really want their religious freedom and people should be allowed to wear a star, cross or burqa.
A school board in Helena, Montana is voting on the proposed new sex education curriculum for students K-12 Sherri started reading off the terms for genitalia they would be taught according to their age level, as well as the sexual information they would be given. Whoopi asked Sherri if her son knows the correct term for his gentile. Sherri said as his mother, Jeffrey does not need to say the word “penis” and she has him call it “wee-wee”. Hasselbeck said it’s up to the parents to teach their child. Joy recounted a time when she was at the beach with her daughter and they saw a picture of a lion mounting his mate. Joy’s daughter asked if when Joy’s and her now ex-husband would do it, would they say “rrrowwww”.
James Brolin was the first guest. Along with Dr. William Lewis and Producer Diane Kirman, James is executive producer of the movie “Standing Ovation”. Described as an equivalent to "Junior High School Musical", “Standing Ovation” is a positive tale of perseverance and passion and features 20 original songs and 13 never-before-seen dance numbers that showcase a cast of talented young newcomers as they learn the importance of loyalty, friendship and family on a journey to fulfilling their dreams. It features actors, singers, songwriters, dancers, gymnasts and musicians from Philadelphia, Atlantic City and the surrounding areas, and reveals the undiscovered talent and drive of the East Coast's youth. James said there are all types of dancing in the movie and moms and kids will love it. He seemed very enthused about it.
They announced Brolin has been in the business for 40 years and even showed a clip of Brolin in “Marcus Welby, M.D.”! He mentioned how he won an Emmy for that show.
“Standing Ovation” will be in theaters Friday.
Celebrity PR publicist Cindy Berger was the final guest. Cindy guides celebrities on how to do image damage control and happens to be employed by Barbara Walters. She addressed the Mel Gibson stories, saying she doesn’t think the tapes have been authenticated yet and said she would advise him to stay quiet. She also said if that is him, he needs to get medical help right away.
Cindy then talked about Lindsey Lohan, saying thank God the judge gave her jail time. Cindy thinks this will save her life if Lindsey takes it seriously.
She then discussed LeBron James, who just left Cleveland to play for the Miami Heat. Cindy said thinks the announcement of him leaving the Cavs should have been handled differently and had he done so, he thinks things would have been better. She said sports figures want to build fans, not alienate them.
I thought Laura Ingraham was an ok guest co-host. At least she got to participate in the topics, which is not always the case with other guest co-hosts. However, I found her to be overly combative and she seems to have a strange creepy fascination with Michelle Obama. I wonder if it’s jealousy or something else, but she certainly holds her to different standards than prior first ladies.
That concludes today’s show. Don’t forget to sign up for Ebates and get your chance to win an iPod or $25 gift card. It’s quick and easy to join. Contest ends 7/31. Please see this link for details.
